The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) was originally established in 1989 as the Botswana Share Market (BSM). Legislation to transform the BSM into a full stock exchange was passed in September 1994 and the BSE started trading in November 1995.
The Botswana Stock Exchange has an automated trading system conducted in Botswana Pula (BWP), which operates throughout the trading day. Deals are settled on t+4 basis and the BSE implemented a Central Shares Depository in May 2008.
Government, quasi-government and corporate bonds are listed on the BSE, although trading in these securities is minimal.
