The origins of the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange date back to 1946 in Bulawayo when the Rhodesian Stock Exchange was opened. In 1951, a second floor opened in Harare in 1951. The current rules of the exchange are shaped by the Rhodesia Stock Exchange Act of 1974, and the ZSE Act of 1996. In 2008, provisions were made for the formation of the Securities Exchange Commission and the demutualisation of the ZSE by the Securities Bill.
The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange uses a callover system conducted in US$ between 10-11:30am and deals are settled at T+7 on calendar days. Settlement is done on a bilateral, gross basis between the stockbrokers.
The ZSE is overseen by the Securities Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe with members licensed by SECZ which also determines the level of capitalization required for members of the ZSE.
